Friar Undergraduate Events

As the makeup of each class differs each year, so does it's calendar of events. However even though ever year's calendar is slightly different, each Friar class eagerly supports and attends the others' events in addition to holding various social and community service events throughtout the year, and participates in a number of joint Friar graduate/undergraduate activities.

A typical week provides more than a few opportunities for Friars to get together. In addition to a regularly scheduled Friars social night, Friars can be found at a mimimum of a dozen performing arts shows and a dozen sporting events events each year, at least one community service project and big non-Penn social event a semester, a luncheon with the Dr. Gutmann at the President's house in the spring, and a few chances to mingle with Friar alums as well. Besides the alumni events listed on this website, the Friar undergrads meet with Friar alums each semester at activities designed just for them in order to pass on a bit of the Friars history and to allow each class to get to know the Friar alums still in the area in a fun and casual setting.

Like their namesake, Friars is about giving back as well and each class proudly carries on the tradition of performing community service. In recent years Friars have been responsible for raising over $400 and hundreds more in school supplies for a neighboring West Philly school and created a Friarside Coffee House to highlight Penn performing arts groups that raised money for Habitat for Humanity. This single event held in the late fall/early winter has raised over $1300 in just two years! Other Friars classes have done walks for MS aned AIDS , donated food for the homeless, and taken orphans to a sporting event on campus.

As you see, Friars is indeed an active lot and take to heart the words of their creed:
"the only good reason for your existence is not what you are going to get out of life, but what you are going to give to life." It is hard pressed to find a Friar who does not find all of these activities to have added to their senior year experience at Penn.
